Day 4 (2/2): Burns Supper, ceilidh
The Friends of Aschaffenburg had organised a resplendent evening at the Salutation Hotel including a mini Burns Supper. It started with a few short speeches, followed by the piping in of the haggis. Stella gave a very good Burns’ rendition followed by a very tasty meal with haggis as a starter. Once the formalities and the meal were finished the band took over for a ceilidh and in typical Scottish style we took to the floor for such old favourites as the Gay Gordons, Stripping the Willow, St Bernhard’s Waltz and many more. Unfortunately the Germans soon showed that the majority were born with two left feet! The evening ended with Auld Lang Syne.
If you are interested you can find many websites about Scottish customs as well as information about Burns and his poems, including the text and music of Auld Lang Syne. This link leads you to a page that gives you the text and its translation as well as the music of the song. In case your browser does not play the song, there is a link on the page to start it.
