Glenda Lawson had invited me for a day out at Ightham Mote, a National Trust property. They were offering an apple and orchard day, with the chance to taste varied apple sorts and to gain insight into how best to prune fruit trees. The weather was perfect, bright and sunny. After a look around the gardens we visited the house, which has 700 years of history. In one of the rooms we found a large spread of different foods that could be made from apples. There was everything from apple and Stilton soup, savoury dishes and lots of delicious cakes, all of which could be tasted. After lunch in the restaurant we learned how to prune fruit trees, watched a hurdle maker at work and heard from a woodcarver how he gained inspiration for his pieces. An enjoyable day out.
