To mark the opening of the new station at Ebbsfleet, Eurostar was offering a two for the price of one fare to Brussels, Lille or Paris. We decided to use the opportunity to travel to Lille with our usual travelling companions, Su and Terry. With help from our neighbour, Marion, who agreed to be our chauffeuse, we arrived at Ebbsfleet to catch the early train just after 7 a.m. The journey to Lille took only 1 hour and 9 minutes – not much longer than it takes us to travel to central London! Once in Lille our main priority was breakfast and we soon found a café to supply our needs. Then it was on to the ‘Palais de Beaux Arts’, where we split up – George and I went to have a browse through the excellent collection of Flemish and other paintings. Then it was a quick lunch snack before starting on a tour of the old centre of Lille with Terry directing. Su had booked us into a very good restaurant for an evening meal and then we made our way back to the international station via the Metro. Back at Ebbsfleet our chauffeuse was waiting to take us home. All agreed it was an interesting day out.
