Sandwich (Page 1/2): Visit to Salutation Gardens

Maureen again organised decent weather for an outing, this time to Sandwich. We started with an interesting guided tour of the Salutation Gardens. Our guide was the very enthusiastic head gardener, Steve Edney. Edwin Lutyens, who collaborated with Gertrude Jekyll on the garden layout, designed the house, not open to the public, in 1912. The 3.5 acre garden was sadly neglected for 25 years until it changed hands three years ago and the new owner undertook a complete renovation, where possible using Lutyens’ and Jekyll’s original plan. It is well worth a visit, although many of the borders are still awaiting planting.
