We were invited to visit Eileen and Patrick at their home in Devon as the Dartington Festival was in full swing and they thought we might like to visit a couple of the concerts. We took the opportunity to also visit Dave and Daphne in Plymouth, where we spent the first two nights of our stay. The journey there was uneventful and we arrived during the afternoon and spent a pleasant time lazing in the garden.
Day 2: Friday
The next day we drove to Wembury for a walk along the coastal path – a National Trust property – towards Newton Ferrers. The walk was leisurely, the sun came out and the views were stunning. During the afternoon we had hoped to visit the National Trust property, Saltram, but we were disappointed to find that the house was shut on Fridays. Instead we went to Buckland Abbey, the erstwhile home of Sir Francis Drake. All went well until we went to the attic rooms, where it was stifling and I had to make a speedy descent. We rounded off the day with a meal overlooking Plymouth Hoo.
