A Visit to Standen, 18th May 2011

I had not seen Sheila for some while so we decided to meet at Standen, a National Trust property near East Grinstead. The architect Philip Webb designed the house and his friend, William Morris, supplied the furnishings. It was built for a wealthy London solicitor, James Beale and his family and it is now seen as an icon of the Arts & Crafts Movement. This style is continued into the garden, which was designed by James’ wife, Margaret Beale, who was a knowledgeable plants woman.
