January was the mildest start to the year that I can ever remember. On just two days we had a very light ground frost, which was not enough to put paid to any of the summer plants. Some, including roses, were still flowering all through the month. However, there was one downside to the weather pattern: we had far too much rain! We are lucky that we live at the top of the North Downs so we should never be flooded. Other parts of Kent and the rest of the South-East did not fare so well. One after another storm came in from the west, flooding the lower areas of Kent around Yalding and also causing havoc in the South-West of the country, especially the Somerset Levels.
