We invited Terry and Su to join us on our annual visit to Germany. We travelled by car as we had a lot to take and even more (wine) to bring back. We met them at Frankfurt airport and escorted them to their accommodation for the week, the hotel Ochsen, next to where we were staying with Veronika and Friedel.
Days 1 & 2: Arrival and Excursion along the Rhine
Terry and Su’s first day had been tiring so we only have one photo: a first taste of German beer. The holiday really started on the second day with an excursion along the Rhine from Bingen to Koblenz then back on the other side to Rüdesheim.
Our first stop was at Boppard for refreshments before continuing our journey to Koblenz where we admired the Residenz. We then made our way to the cable car. Built last year for the garden show, it links the Deutsches Eck (German Corner) with the Festung (fortification) Ehrenbreitstein on the other side of the Rhine. It is a shame that the garden show has now been dismantled and much of the area at the Festung has been left to return to its natural state. After an adventure trying to find somewhere to eat, after being assured there were two restaurants on the site, we eventually found one with stunning views looking back to the Deutsches Eck. The meal was delicious with fresh chanterelle mushrooms. We returned to Koblenz via the cable car and had a look around the Deutsches Eck before continuing our journey on the other side of the Rhine with a quick stop at Rüdesheim.
